Sindhuli Road Construction Project with a total length of about 158 km is one of the most promising projects being implemented under Japan's ODA. It is divided into four sections: Section I: Bardibash-Sindhuli Bazaar (37 km), Section II: Sindhuli Bazaar-Khurkot (39 km), Section III: Khurkot-Nepalthok (32 km) and Section IV: Nepalthok-Dhulikhel (50 km). To date, out of the 158 km long highway, 99.5 km have already been opened for road traffic use and the amount of grant that has been extended for the project amounts to 15.8 billion yen including grant assistance for the construction of phase III of Sindhuli Road Section II. Recently, Section IV of the Road was opened and grant assistance for the construction of Phase III of Section II of the Road was extended to His Majesty's Government of Nepal.
Sindhuli Road Section: IV (Dhulikhel-Nepalthok) Opens
Opening ceremony of Dhulikhel-Nepalthok Section of Sindhuli Road
On May 5, the Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works jointly inaugurated the 50 km long Section IV of the Sindhuli Road which stretches from Dhulikhel to Nepalthok. Section IV had been partially opened and the construction of the remaining part was almost over, however floods and landslides caused by the torrential rain in July 2002 seriously damaged this section. The concerned authorities immediately started the restoration work of the damaged sections under grant assistance for Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Section IV and finally the Section was opened this year for road traffic movement.

Until the opening of this road section, the people living in the adjoining area faced various difficulties due to the lack of road access. Now, with the opening of this 50 km long new road section, they have better access to the markets of Dhulikhel and to the rest of the country through the Araniko Highway. Road access benefits the people and communities living in the adjoining area through providing access to basic human needs as well as promoting agricultural activities and local industries, which ultimately helps contribute to alleviating poverty in the country.

On May 19 on behalf of their respective governments, Ambassador Mr. Tsutomu Hiraoka and Mr. Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Finance Secretary of HMG of Nepal signed and exchanged Notes on Grant Assistance for the Construction of Sindhuli Road (Section II: Sindhuli Bazaar-Khurkot) amounting to 2,588,000,000 (approx. NRs.1,697,728,000).
The Grant is intended to procure the products and services necessary for the execution of Phase III of Section II, which stretches for about 13.7 km. After the completion of Phase III of Section II, approximately 126 km of the Sindhuli Road will be completed.
The Sindhuli Road Construction Project aims to achieve sustainable economic development and alleviate poverty through boosting the socio-economic activities in the areas adjoining the project as well as providing alternative access for the capital city in terms of market accessibility etc. In addition, this road reduces the distance to the eastern Terai by about 170km, which will save time and operation cost, thus contributing to the market price.
