Japan Emergency Grant Strengthens IOM’s Support for Nepal Government-led Flash Flood Response (September 23, 2026)

The Government of Japan has contributed an emergency grant of USD  1 million to strengthen the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) support for Nepal Government-led humanitarian assistance, following the August 2026 flash floods and debris flows that affected three districts of central Nepal: Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

The contribution will enable IOM to provide emergency shelter assistance and essential household to the most vulnerable flood-affected households in priority locations, identified in coordination with Government authorities and humanitarian partners, helping families meet their immediate needs and restore basic living conditions following the disaster.

“Japan is pleased to provide emergency assistance to support the people affected by the recent floods in Nepal,” said MAEDA Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, “Through this contribution, we hope to help vulnerable households meet their immediate needs by providing essential shelter assistance and non-food items, while supporting their efforts to restore basic living conditions.”

IOM has deployed its teams to the affected areas and has been assessing the situation to ensure that assistance is timely, well-coordinated, and addresses priority needs on the ground. Support will be distributed in close coordination with national and local authorities, relevant humanitarian clusters, and other relevant partners, including national and local civil society organizations, to ensure last-mile reach.

IOM will also place strong emphasis on Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), supporting the establishment and strengthening of accessible complaints and feedback mechanisms. This will empower affected populations to raise concerns and provide feedback safely, helping ensure that assistance remains responsive to their priorities.

“Japan’s generous contribution comes at a critical time for the people of Nepal, who have lost their homes, essential belongings, and loved ones to the devastating floods,” says Helene Fors, IOM Chief of Mission in Nepal. “This will enable IOM to support the Government of Nepal in their efforts to deliver essential shelter and household assistance to people navigating their lives after the floods. IOM is grateful to the Government of Japan as a key humanitarian partner to both IOM and Nepal.”

IOM remain committed to working closely with the Government of Nepal, Government of Japan, local authorities, humanitarian partners and affected communities to ensure that assistance is delivered timely, effectively and transparently, with the needs and voices of affected people at the centre of the response.
