Partial Opening of Sindhuli Road

Ministry of Physical Planning and Works and the Embassy of Japan have jointly opened a 7.2km long segment of the Sindhuli Road (Section IV: Dhulikhel - Nepalthok), from Narke to Bhyakure Khola for road traffic movement today, which is being implemented under the grant assistance of the Government of Japan. After the opening of this Segment, total 41km (Dhulikhel to Bhyakure Khola) of this Section of the Sindhuli Road will be opened for traffic movement.

Due to the lack of road access, the people living in this remote area have been facing difficulties in maintaining a stable life. Now, they can enjoy better access to the markets of Dhulikhel and the Capital City. As a result, they will enjoy socio-economic as well as many other benefits from this accessibility.

Previously, from the effect of opening a part of Sindhuli Road, we have experienced a positive impact on the market price in villages adjoining the roadside, reducing it by about 20% to 30% subject to the material. Another positive aspect is the steady increase in the economic activities in the area, thereby helping to ease villagers' daily life. Accessibility along the area adjoining the Sindhuli Road primarily benefits the people and community in socio-economic development.

Another objective of this project for Construction of Sindhuli Road is to provide an alternative access road from the Capital City to the Terai plain. There was only one gateway out of the Capital to the East-West Highway and the rest of the country, and there has been an urgent need for a reliable and alternative trunk road connecting Kathmandu Valley and the Terai.

Under the request of the Government of Nepal, the Government of Japan has been extending grant assistance to the Government of Nepal for the construction of Sindhuli Road. The Road to be constructed under this Project is about 158km in length and is divided into four sections. Of the four sections of Sindhuli Road, Section I - the 37km section from Bardibas to Sindhuli Bazar - has already been completed and was opened in 1997. Similarly, Section II - the 39km section stretch from Sindhuli Bazar to Khurkot is also under construction.

The Embassy of Japan sincerely hopes that the opening of this Segment will provide many opportunities to the people residing in the area and that certainly marks yet another milestone in strengthening the warm relationship between the people of Japan and Nepal.
