The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has decided to extend a grant of eighty-three thousand, one hundred and thirty-seven US Dollars (USD 83,137), equivalent to approximately six million, one hundred eighty-seven thousand, and fifty six Nepalese rupees (NPR 6,187,056) to the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia - Nepal (AMDA Nepal) for the implementation of the Project for Construction of AMDA Mechi Hospital in Japan's fiscal year 2006 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.
On July 29, a grant contract to this effect was signed and exchanged between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan, and Dr. Ramesh Prasad AACHARYA, Chairperson of AMDA Nepal, under the witness of His Excellency Senior-Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Government of Japan, Mr. Yasuhisa SHIOZAKI.
The Grant will be utilized exclusively for the construction of a 15-bed hospital building at Mechinagar Municipality in Dhulabari, Jhapa. It is expected that the Hospital will serve the inhabitants of the Municipality, as well as residents living around the city and even people from in the neighboring mountainous districts such as Taplejung, Panchthar and Ilam. Because of the lack of a proper medical institution in this area, many patients are compelled to seek expensive medical services in private hospitals across the border.
Besides this, the Hospital will be used as one of the centers providing basic medical services for Bhutanese Refugees through the program that AMDA has been implementing under the support of UNHCR.
AMDA will bear the responsibility for the arrangement of the necessary furniture and equipment for the Hospital. Similarly, Mechinagar Municipality and the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) have made a commitment to contribute to the smooth operation of the Hospital and to the necessary infrastructure development.
During the signing ceremony, His Excellency Mr. Hiraoka expressed his hope that AMDA Mechi Hospital will address the inadequacies in the health services in the region. Thus, the project will be instrumental in improving the health conditions of Nepalese people living in the remote area of Nepal.
H.E. Mr. Hiraoka also expressed his belief that the establishment of the Hospital established during the memorable occasion of 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Nepal will play a vital role in strengthening the friendly relations between the two nations.
