Japan Extended Relief Assistance to Flood Victims

On August 1, 2002, Ambassador Kaminaga handed over emergency aid materials (tents and blankets) worth about ten million yen (10,000,000) approximately six million, five hundred and fifty thousand Nepali rupees (NRs. 6,550,000), in total, to the Director General of the Department of Disaster Management, Kumar Prasad Poudyal. The relief materials are intended for the victims of the recent floods and landslides caused by the torrential monsoon rain.

The Government of Japan has extended this aid from humanitarian point of view considering the friendly relationship between the two countries, taking account of the scale of the disaster. Further, this assistance is intended to support the government's emergency relief programmes for the people in areas affected by floods and landslides.
Expressing his deep sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the victims of the current disaster, Ambassador Kaminaga said he was very honoured to offer the emergency disaster relief assistance to the Government of Nepal. He also expressed his hope that the relief materials would be utilized for the benefit of the victims and that relief assistance would be helpful to those affected.

Accepting the relief materials, Mr. Poudyal remarked, "Geographically Nepal is susceptible to environmental hazards. We are also very happy and thankful that we have been receiving technical assistance related to disaster prevention from Japan for a long time." Further, on behalf of the Government of Nepal, Mr. Poudyal thanked the Japanese Government for assistance in such grave circumstances and assured Ambassador Kaminaga that the relief materials would reach those in need.
