Grassroots Grant Assistance for the Construction of a
Pedestrian Bridge

The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has decided to extend financial assistance to the L. Angel International Volunteer Association (Japanese NGO) for the implementation of 'a pedestrian bridge (a bascule bridge) construction enterprise' over Indrawati River of Sindhupalchok district in JFY 2002 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) Scheme of the Government of Japan.

A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged in Kathmandu today between Kazumi Suzuki, Charge'd affaires of Japan, and Fumio Nagaura President, L. Angel International Volunteer Association. Under this grant, the Embassy of Japan will provide sixty-three thousand, six hundred and thirty US dollars (US$63,630), equivalent to approximately four million, nine hundred forty-seven thousand, two hundred and thirty two Nepalese rupees (NRs. 4,947,232), to construct a 162-meter-long suspended bridge over Indrawati River in Sindhupalchok district.

It is a fact that the local population residing in Sangachowk and Bhimtar area of Indrawati Valley has been facing manifold problems i.e. social and economic links due to the lack of a pedestrian bridge over Indrawati River. Besides this, commuting to the school located at Samdebesi Jyamdi is difficult for the local children, thereby, affecting their access to educational opportunities. In view of this fact, the Government of Japan extended this grant with the hope that the local people of Indrawati Valley could benefit from this project.

The proposed bridge is expected to serve the local villagers by providing perennial access to the market linked by the village earthen road to the Arniko Highway, thereby enhancing the economic and social activities in the area.
