The Embassy of Japan has decided to extend a grant of eighty-three thousand, four hundred and eighty-eight US Dollars (US$ 83,488), equivalent to approximately six million, nine hundred and twelve thousand, eight hundred and six Nepalese Rupees (NRs 6,912,806).to the Helping Committee for the Construction of Girl's Hostel of Tribhuvan University Bhojpur Multiple Campus, in Japan's Fiscal Year 2008 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.
A Grant contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tatsuo MIZUNO, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Ms.Jayanti Rai, Chairperson of the Helping Committee for the Construction of Girl's Hostel of Tribhuvan University Bhojpur Multiple Campus.
The Grant will be utilized for the construction of a three-storey hostel building consisting of 24 rooms, providing accommodation facilities for 52 female students, mainly from remote areas of the East Development Region, who are pursuing studies in teachers' training. The Campus was established in 1965 for the purpose of encouraging higher education in Bhojpur District; for example, the training courses provided by the Campus encourage girls to enter school. At present, insufficient lodging facilities act as a constraint for students from remote areas. Out of the total project cost of Nrs 8,460,447, the Committee will contribute up to 28 percent of the cost.
Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) is a scheme to provide financial assistance for the implementation of social and economic development and emergency humanitarian assistance projects, being undertaken by non-profit making local organizations and institutions in developing countries and regions. The GGP scheme has been able to provide flexible support for economic and social development cooperation activities that have a direct affect at grassroots level.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. MIZUNO stressed the need for promoting girls' education for the economic and social development of Nepal. He also expressed his belief that Bojpur Campus, with better hostel facilities and learning environment, will encourage female students from distant areas to pursue higher education. Thus, their contribution to the field of education in the future will promote education in remote areas. Furthermore, he expressed his sincere hope that the hostel will play a symbolic role in further strengthening the relationship between the people of Japan and Nepal.
