1. Japan, after the acceptance of request from the United Nations, has dispatched 6 Japanese Self Defense Force personnel as Arms Monitors to UNMIN(United Nations Mission in Nepal) since March 2007, and has been highly regarded by the United Nations and Government of Nepal.
They have monitored the management of arms and armies at Maoist army cantonments as well as barracking of the Nepal Army in Nepal.
2. UNMIN has played an important role for the peace building in Nepal. Especially, monitoring of the management of arms and armies, which is essential element of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, is indispensable for the smooth implementation of Constituent Assembly Poll.
3. Asked by Government of Nepal, Security Council decided to extend the period of UNMIN's activity for 6 months, on 23 January, 2008.
In response to the decision by SC, Government of Japan determined to rotate all 6 JSDF personnel to UNMIN in March 2008.
Rotating personnel will take the same duties as currently deployed monitors, such as management of arms and armies.
4. Under the present plan of International Peace Cooperation Duties in Nepal, though their term is valid till 31 March, International Peace Cooperation Headquarters is coordinating with the concerned government offices about the alteration of plan such as 6 months extension, which is valid until 30 September 2008, and so on.
