SHARAKU Interpreted by Japan�fs Contemporary Artists

The Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Japanese Universities Alumni Association, Nepal (JUAAN) and Japanese Language Teachers Association Nepal (JALTAN) is organizing an Exhibition SHARAKU: Interpreted by Japan�fs Contemporary Artists in Kathmandu from March 1 to 11, 2104 (9:30-16:30) at the Embassy Hall, Panipokhari. The exhibition is supported by the Japan Foundation. Entrance to the exhibition is free for all.
The famous Edo-period Ukiyo-e (woodblock print) artist Toshusai SHARAKU is known for his inimitable bust portraits of Kabuki actors. The exhibition is neither an overview of works by Sharaku, nor an assembly of famous examples of ukiyo-e, but a report of the personal reinterpretation of Sharaku’s bust by today’s graphic designers and artists. Included in the exhibition are Sharaku’s bust portraits; posters by graphic designers; and paintings, sculptures, ceramic and woodblock prints by contemporary artists who have reinterpreted Sharaku using a combination of fluid ideas and definitive expressions. The exhibition is made up of three sections: ‘Reproductions of Sharaku’, ‘Sharaku in Graphic Art’ and ‘Homage to Sharaku’.
