Ikebana and Kimono Demonstration Held in Kathmandu
|
The Embassy of Japan hosted demonstrations of Ikebana, the traditional art of flower arrangement and Kimono, the traditional Japanese costume by instructor Ms. Aiko Imaizumi and her associates on September 28 and 29, 2005.
Welcoming the guests, Ambassador Mr. Hiraoka remarked that Ikebana is an art form that reflects the Japanese aesthetic sense that emanates from their view of nature. He commented, "The demonstration will help familiarize the Nepali people with these Japanese traditional arts and will also contribute to deepening the understanding between the two countries."
As Ms. Imaizumi created a graceful arrangement in front of the audience, she explained the philosophy behind Ikebana. She described Ikebana as not simply the art of arranging flowers in a vase, but rather an art form that stresses harmony and coexistence with nature and the unity of the individual and nature. This was followed by the demonstration of different kinds of Kimono ranging from simple casual wear to brilliantly colored formal wear. The demonstration of Kimono dressing and belt tying by Ms. Imaizumi and associates was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all the audience.
Ms. Imaizumi has been teaching both Ikebana and Kimono through her own classes for more than two decades. She is also active in promoting the charm of both these arts and contributing to the enhancement of Japanese culture overseas. Her recent works include the demonstration of Ikebana and Kimono during cultural programs organized by the Embassy of Japan in Denmark.
