Handover Ceremony of Mobile Clinic Van, Mobile X-ray Machine and Ultra-Sound Machines for the Project for Medical Care and Preventive Medical Services Through Out-Reached Clinic for Conflict Victims of the Mid-Western Nepal Implemented by Nepal Medical College

His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Nepal handed over one (1) mobile clinic van, one (1) mobile X-ray machine and two (2) ultra sound machines, procured under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan, to Nepalgunj Medical College today amid a ceremony held here at Nepalgunj.

The Embassy of Japan in Nepal provided financial assistance amounting to eighty-six thousand and forty-five US Dollars (USD 86,045), equivalent to approximately six million, seventy-nine thousand and seventy-nine Nepalese rupees (NPR 6,079,079), under the GGP scheme in Japan's Fiscal Year 2004, to Nepalgunj Medical College, Lord Buddha Educational Academy. This grant was for the procurement of the said vehicle and equipment for the implementation of the Project for Medical Care and Preventive Medical Services through Out-Reached Clinic for Conflict Victims of the Mid-Western Nepal.

It is a fact that there is dire need for medical and preventive care as well as a need to improve the situation of basic health and medical care facilities in rural Nepal, where people from backward and poor community and victims of conflict are being affected. In light of this, Nepalgunj Medical College is providing emergency services to the victims of conflict free, and with highly subsidized rates for treatment and medical services to poor and deprived people. Further, in addition to functioning as a hub-hospital for the Mid-Western and Far-Western Development Regions, Nepalgunj Medical College helps to bring medical personnel and medical care closer to conflict victims including people from poor backgrounds and deprived communities who are not able to travel to hospitals due to their remote location and the conflict situation. The Medical College will further contribute to reducing child and maternal mortality rates, and improving the overall health situation of the area through the initiation of campaigns for health awareness and preventive health care.

Speaking at the function, His Excellency Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his firm belief that the project signifies the aspiration of the Government of Japan and its people for the promotion of the wellbeing of Nepalese people.

It is to be noted that this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relation between Japan and Nepal. Japan as a close friend and development partner of Nepal, has been assisting Nepal, for several decades, in its efforts to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable economic development through economic and technical cooperation.
