Japan Extends Grant Assistance for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities

The Government of Japan has agreed to extend grant assistance of nine hundred twenty-seven million yen (927,000,000), approximately seven million, five hundred and seventy thousand US dollars (US$7,570,000), or about five hundred ninety million, four hundred and ninety-nine thousand Nepalese rupees (NRs.590, 499,000), to His Majesty's Government of Nepal for the execution of the project for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities.

His Excellency Mr. Zenji KAMINAGA, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Nepal, and Mr. Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, signed and exchanged the Notes today on behalf of their respective Governments.

This Grant will be utilized to purchase the products and services necessary for the construction of elevated water tanks and other facilities for the improvement of water supply services in the East of Kathmandu, which is the second phase of the project for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities. The Project is already in implementation under the grant assistance extended by the Government of Japan based on the Exchange of Notes signed between the two Governments on December 27, 2001.

The Project is intended to improve the water supply services in the target area (South-East of Kathmandu, Madhyapur, West of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur service area) in the Kathmandu Valley. In implementing this whole Project, intake facilities, water treatment plant, transmission facilities, elevated tanks etc. will be constructed under the Manahara site and transmission facilities, reservoir etc. will be constructed under the Shainbu site. This Project is expected to contribute to reduce the leakage and to improve the water supply capacity in quantity as well as quality in the target area. It is also expected that the facilities constructed under this Project will play an important role in improving the water supply services in the target area even after the Melamchi Water Supply Project has materialized.

On the occasion, H.E. Mr. KAMINAGA expressed sincere hopes that the continued support of the Government of Japan to His Majesty's Government of Nepal in its development efforts would certainly help promote Nepal's efforts for nation-building and improve the well-being of the Nepalese people. This support would also help to strengthen the existing cordial relationship of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
