Japanese Assistance for Medical Care Preventive Medical Services through Out Reached Clinics for Conflict Victims of the Mid-Western Nepal

The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has decided to extend a grant of eighty-six thousand and forty-five US Dollars (US$ 86,045), equivalent to approximately six million seventy-eight thousand two hundred and nineteen Nepalese rupees (NRs 6,078,219) to Nepalgunj Medical College, Lord Buddha Educational Academy, for the implementation of the Project for Medical Care and Preventive Medical Services through Out Reached Clinic for Conflict Victims of the Mid-Western Nepal in Japan's fiscal year 2004 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.

A grant contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan, and Mr. Mukunda Bhakta SHRESTHA, Founder Chairman of Nepalgunj Medical College, Lord Buddha Educational Academy.
 

The grant will be exclusively utilized for the procurement of one (1) mobile clinic van, one (1) mobile X-ray machine and two (2) ultra-sound machines. Nepalgunj Medical College will bear the operation and maintenance cost of the vehicle and the equipment. The objective of the Project is to upgrade the existing facility and services of the Academy and support its initiation of out-reached medical camps in Banke, Bardiya, Dang and Surkhet districts of Mid-Western Development Region. It is expected that the Project will help bring medical personnel and medical care closer to conflict victims who have not been able to travel to hospital due to remoteness and prevailing conflict. About 18,000 people, victims of conflict and people from poor background and deprived community, are expected to benefit from the Project annually.

Nepalgunj Medical College, the recipient institution, will contribute necessary human resources, operational and management cost, and treatments and other necessary equipment to carry out various specialized as well as generalized treatment in medical camps conducted in the conflict area in periodical basis.

During the signing ceremony, His Excellency Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his hope that Nepalgunj Medical College, besides providing emergency services to the victims of conflict, their free treatment, as well as free services or services at highly subsidized rates for poor and deprived people, will function as a hub-hospital for the Mid-Western and Far-Western Development regions. He mentioned that as a close friend and development partner of Nepal, Japan has been assisting His Majesty's Government of Nepal in its efforts of alleviating poverty and achieving sustainable economic development through economic and technical cooperation for over three decades and he also expressed his firm belief that the project signifies the aspiration of the Government of Japan and its people for the promotion of the well-being of the Nepalese people.
