New Postal Stamps Issued


On December 8, 2002 cancellation mark was affixed on postal stamps of Reverend Ekai Kawaguchi, the first recorded Japanese monk to visit Nepal, and portrait of the senior social worker, late Dayabir Singh Kansakar, under the personality series 2002. Minister for Information and Communication Ramesh Nath Pandey affixed the cancellation mark. Director General of the Department of Postal Services Mr. Sridhar Gautam and Mr. Kazumi Suzuki, Charge d' Affairs of Japan were also present at the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Suzuki stated the cultural ties between Japan and Nepal date back to much earlier days before direct people to people contact started in 1899, when Reverend Ekai Kawaguchi, a Japanese Buddhist monk, visited Nepal. He remarked that the issue of postal ticket with the figure of Kawaguchi would contribute in better understanding the history and friendship between the two countries.

Minister Pandey stated that the postal stamps would be very important to familiarize the image of Nepal in the international community. He also expressed his confidence that the publication of the postal stamp on Japanese monk Kawaguchi would help promote friendly relations between Japan and Nepal.
