Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road (Section IV)

The Government of Japan has agreed to extend grant assistance of four hundred and thirty-four million yen (434,000,000), approximately three million six hundred and eighty-three thousand US dollars (US$3,683,000), or about two hundred and seventy-five million, five hundred and ninety thousand Nepalese Rupees (NRs.275,590,000), to His Majesty's Government of Nepal for the execution of the project for Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road (Section IV) in Japan's FY 2003.

His Excellency Mr. Zenji Kaminaga, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Nepal, and Mr. Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, signed and exchanged the Notes today on behalf of their respective governments.

This grant will be utilized to purchase products and services necessary for the rehabilitation of the road, revetment and foot protection, and services necessary for the transportation of the above-said products, for the implementation of the project.

This project is intended to rehabilitate the damaged section of Sindhuli Road (Section IV), which is the result of incessant rain last year from July 21 to 23, 2002. As a result of torrential rain during the dates, landslide, slope failure, erosion, scouring, damage of causeway etc. have been identified in the area along the 50km Sindhuli Road (Section IV) (Dhulikhel - Nepalthok Section). About 140 damaged sections have been identified in which about 36 are seriously damaged.

In light of this, the Government of Japan has agreed to extend this Grant Assistance to His Majesty's Government of Nepal to rehabilitate the above-mentioned damaged road sections. It is expected that this project will be instrumental in rehabilitating the damaged sections of Sindhuli Road Section - IV, and will facilitate smooth vehicular movement in the days to come.

On the occasion, H.E. Mr. Kaminaga expressed sincere hopes that the continued support of the Government of Japan to His Majesty's Government of Nepal in its development efforts would certainly help promote Nepal's efforts for nation building and improve the well being of the Nepalese people. This support would also help to strengthen the existing cordial relationship of friendship and cooperation between the people of our two nations.
