Japanese Assistance for Construction of Secondary School in Bhimsengola, Kathmandu

The Government of Japan has decided to extend a grant of one hundred two thousand, two hundred and fifty US Dollars (USD 102,250) equivalent to approximately seven million, five hundred forty-six thousand, and fifty Nepalese Rupees (NPR 7,546,050) to AIUEO Circle Association (ACA) Japan in Japan's Fiscal Year 2006 under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects scheme of the Government of Japan. AIUEO Circle Association Japan will implement the Project for Construction of Bhimsengola Secondary School Building at Bhimsengola, Kathmandu.

A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Sugahiko SUGIMOTO, President, ACA Japan.

The Grant will be utilized for the construction of a three-storey school building as well as the procurement of educational accessories and materials. The fund also covers the monitoring costs to be incurred during the construction.

Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects is a scheme to provide financial assistance for implementation of social and economic development and emergency humanitarian assistance projects being undertaken by Japanese NGOs in developing countries and regions. The basic format of this scheme consists of six major areas, including support for economic and social development cooperation activities that have a direct effect at grassroots level and grant aid for NGO emergency humanitarian assistance projects etc.

Speaking at the function, H.E. Mr. HIRAOKA informed the audience that Bhimsengola Secondary School, which has provided, for four decades, education for students from poor and disadvantaged communities as well as for orphans from various part of the country despite being located in the core area of the Capital, the school lacks proper physical facilities.

H.E expressed his belief that the construction of the new school building is expected not only to provide quality education to a larger number of children from the socially and economically deprived communities, but also exhibit itself as a model school among such community and private schools and hoped that the school will be able to create awareness of education among the people. H.E. Mr. HIRAOKA also elaborated on the contribution from the Government of Japan to the Basic and Primary Education Program (BPEP) I & II, and its support in the construction of primary schools in realization of "Education for All by 2015".

H.E. Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his belief that the construction of the new school building during the memorable occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Nepal will play a significant role in symbolizing the friendly relations between the two nations at the people-to-people level.
