Japan Hands Over Rice to Nepal

Mr. Shuichi SAKAKIBARA, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, has handed over to the Government of Nepal rice received under Japan’s Food Aid (KR) to Nepal in Japan’s Fiscal Year 2010, at a function organized today at the premises of the Nepal Food Corporation.

The Government of Japan extended a Grant Assistance of one billion yen (¥1,000,000,000), equivalent to eight hundred and eighty eight million, Nepalese Rupees (NRs. 888,000,000), to the Government of Nepal to procure rice in Japan’s Fiscal Year 2010. The assistance was provided with a basic objective of enabling the Government of Nepal to procure rice and supply it to the disadvantaged people living in the food deficit districts of Nepal. A total 19,021 metric tons (MT) of rice procured under Food Aid 2010, has already been delivered to food storage centers located in Nepalgunj, Surkhet, Birgunj and Kathmandu. Also some quantities of rice have been supplied from these centers to food-deficit areas. Nepal Food Corporation will be responsible for the transportation of rice from the storage centers, to the food deficit areas in the hilly and mountainous regions of Nepal.

As a close friend and development partner of Nepal, Japan has been providing Food Aid to Nepal since 1970. As of Japan’s Fiscal Year 2010, Japan has extended Food Aid to Nepal totaling about 131,596 MT of rice and 24,300 MT of wheat, worth 9.73 billion Japanese Yen.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. SAKAKIBARA expressed his belief that the rice handed over to the Government of Nepal today will help overcome the food deficit situation facing Nepal and will contribute to current difficulties. He also hoped that Nepal will be able to develop its own sustainable system for overcoming food deficits in the future.

Mr. SAKAKIBARA concluded by expressing his belief that the Food Aid shows Japan and its people's wishes for the promotion of well being among the Nepalese people.
