Japan Extends Food Aid to Nepal |
The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a Grant Assistance of three hundred million Yen ( 300,000,000), equivalent to one hundred eighty-two million and seven hundred thousand Nepalese Rupees (NRs.182,700,000), or approximately two million, five hundred and eighty-four thousand US Dollars (US$2,584,000), to the Government of Nepal as Food Aid (KR) of Japan's Fiscal Year 2006.
His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Vidyadhar Mallik, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal have signed and exchanged Notes today on behalf of their respective Governments.
The Assistance has been provided with the basic objective of enabling the Government of Nepal to procure rice and supply it to the needy living in food deficit districts of Nepal. The rice will be delivered by the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) through the national distribution network of the Government of Nepal.
Japan, being a close friend and development partner, has been providing Food Aid to Nepal since 1970. Food Aid is one of the oldest schemes of the Government of Japan, and as of Japan's Fiscal Year 2005, the Government of Japan had extended Food Aid to Nepal 18 times, worth 6.92 billion Japanese Yen.
HE Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA expressed wishes that the Food Aid will be of assistance to the Government of Nepal and ease the difficulties faced by the people in the affected areas. He also stated that it is the wish of the Government of Japan that today's Food Aid will contribute to further building of atmosphere conducive to consolidating peace in Nepal.
On the occasion, HE Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his belief that Food Aid signifies the wishes of the Government of Japan and its people for the promotion and well being of the Nepalese people.
