Japan's Assistance for the Project for Construction of Latinath Higher Secondary School, Darchula
|
The Government of Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of sixty-four thousand, six hundred and forty-one US Dollars (USD 64,641), equivalent to approximately five million, three hundred and ten thousand, two hundred and fifty-eight Nepalese Rupees (Nrs 5,310,258) to the Management Committee of Latinath Higher Secondary School for the implementation of the Project for the Construction of Latinath Higher Secondary School in Darchula District. This financial assistance is extended under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme of the Government of Japan in Japan's FY 2008.
A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tatsuo MIZUNO, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Keshab Raj Bista, Headmaster, Latinath Higher Secondary School, Darchula.
The objective of this project is to improve the learning environment in Darchula District in the Far-Western Development Region. The grant will be utilized for the construction of two-storey school building of 12 rooms, suitable for 884 students.
Latinath Higher Secondary School, established in 1954 as primary school and upgraded in 1991 to secondary level, was constructed by local communities. Now it is in a dilapidated condition and without sufficient classrooms. Nevertheless, the school has been awarded prizes for quality education services by the Ministry of Education three times.
The Government of Japan has been supporting the Government of Nepal in its efforts to provide opportunities for the education to all children in the country. (Through the Education for All by 2015 Programs). Currently these Programs do not cover Darchula District.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Mr. Mizuno expressed his belief that this assistance not only contributed to enhancing access to basic and primary education in Darchula District, but also to providing quality education to a greater number of children from the villages and adjoining VDCs. Thus, the project contributes to reducing the gap of educational opportunities and facilities between urban cities and rural areas. He also expressed his hope that the school, with a better educational environment, will create awareness of education among the people, increase the number of educated people in the area, and uplift the socio-economic environment of the region. Furthermore, he expressed his sincere hope that the school will play a symbolic role in further strengthening the relationship between the people of Japan and Nepal.
