Japan's Aid for Emergency Food
|
The handing over ceremonies of emergency food for the affected people were held in Guleriya of Bardiya district and in Simikot of Humla district on June 11 and 12, respectively. Ambassador Kaminaga, Mr. Sarad Chandra Paudyal, representative of Home Ministry, Chief District Officers of the respective districts and many others attended the ceremonies.
The Embassy of Japan had extended Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects for the transportation arrangements (from Japan to Nepal) under the project for "Emergency Food Supply for the Insurgency Affected People" of Nepal. The emergency food included more than 36 metric tons, equivalent to 362,750 meals, donated by the local governments in Japan via Japan Society for Promotion of Diplomacy. The donated food is of pre-cooked and dried type and is consumable just by adding water, and is used in emergency cases.
The Government of Nepal has been planning to rehabilitate those displaced or affected by the insurgency, specifically in the mid-western and far-western regions. The government has been under constant pressure to make food materials available to the displaced people in the country.
In the ceremony that took place on June 11 in Humla, a brief outline of the relief scheme was presented by Mr. Paudyal and this was followed by the demonstration of food preparation. After the distribution of the food, Ambassador Kaminaga appreciated the Ministry of Home Affairs for jointly setting up the important operation with the Government of Japan. He remarked that the project signified the aspiration of the Government of Japan and its people to partially address the problem and suffering of people affected by the insurgency in Nepal. Furthermore, he expressed his hope that emergency food supply would be helpful to those affected in the mid western region- Rukum, Rolpa, Salyan, Pyuthan, Jajarkot, Humla, Jumla, Bardiya and Kalikot.
With the completion of the above-mentioned ceremonies in two districts, the distribution of food has been started in rest of seven districts.
