Japanese Assistance for Construction of Cold Storage House for Junar

The Government of Japan has decided to extend a grant of eighty-six thousand, two hundred and thirty US Dollars (USD 86,230); equivalent to approximately six million, one hundred seventy-eight thousand, three hundred and eighty Nepalese Rupees (NPR 6,178,380) to Sindhuli Junar Development Association for the implementation of the Project for Construction of Sindhuli Cold Storage House for Junar under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme of the Government of Japan in Japan's Fiscal Year 2006.
A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Dipak Koirala, Chairman, Sindhuli Junar Development Association.

The grant will be utilized for the construction of a multi-storey cold storage building with capacity storage of 250 metric tons for Junar, along with its electrification, and procurement of cooling unit and essential equipment to run the facility. Out of the total project cost of approximately 9.6 million Nepali Rupees, Sindhuli DDC, VDCs and Kamalamai Municipality Office as well as farmers will contribute the remaining cost incurred during the project implementation.
Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) is a scheme to provide financial assistance for the implementation of social and economic development and emergency humanitarian assistance projects being undertaken by non-profit making local organizations and institutions in developing countries and regions. The GGP scheme has been able to provide flexible support for economic and social development cooperation activities that have a direct affect at grassroots level.
H.E. Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his belief that the project will further contribute to boost the value of Junar and improve the conditions of farmers in the region combined with the result to improve the connectivity to greater markets by the on-going construction of the Banepa-Sindhuli-Bardibas Road. At the same time H.E. HIRAOKA expressed that the project will play a significant role in strengthening the friendly relations between the two nations. It is to be noted that Sindhuli District has been developed as one of the centers for Junar production under the Horticulture development program, with technical assistance provided by Japan in 1990's.
Speaking at the function, H.E. Mr. HIRAOKA also informed those present of the "Development Initiative", launched by Japan in December 2005, which aims to promote development assistance to support development which utilizes the chain of commerce.
The signing ceremony for the extension of the grant is being conducted in the memorable year 2006, the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Nepal.
