Japan's Assistance for Strengthening Reproductive Health Service Project through improving Health Facilities and Capacity Building for Medical Service Workers (Phase 2)

The Government of Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of 713,095 US Dollars; equivalent to approximately 61,647,062 Nepalese Rupees to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Japan, in Japan’s Fiscal Year 2012 under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects Scheme of the Government of Japan. ADRA Japan, in close coordination with ADRA Nepal, will implement the Strengthening Reproductive Health Service Project through improving Health Facilities and Capacity Building for Medical Service Workers (Phase 2) in Kalikot District.

A Grant Contract relating to this project was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Kunio TAKAHASHI, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Ms. Mai OGAWA, Project Manager, ADRA Japan.

ADRA is an international non-governmental organization working in many countries throughout the world.  ADRA Japan, an affiliated organization of ADRA, has been working in Nepal since 1989.

The grant which was signed today will be utilized to improve neonatal and maternal health care service by upgrading health facilities and promoting capacity development among medical service workers in the Kalikot District in Mid-Western Nepal. Prior to the project which was signed today, ADRA Japan implemented the first phase of “Strengthening Reproductive Health Service Project through improving Health Facilities and Capacity    Building for Medical Service Workers” under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects Scheme in Japan’s FY 2011.  Under this project, ADRA Japan supported the establishment of Birth Centers in six Village Development Committees (VDCs) in the Dailekh District. ADRA Japan also supported the implementation of various capacity development activities for medical service workers in the targeted areas.

To enhance the outcomes from the former project and expand their activities to other communities, ADRA Japan will utilize the grant exclusively to establish Birth Centers at five VDCs in Kalikot District. ADRA Japan, in collaboration with ADRA Nepal and Safe Motherhood Network Federation of Nepal, will also implement various capacity development activities including Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) as this topic has been prioritized by the Government of Nepal in “National Reproductive Health Strategy".

Speaking at the function, Ambassador TAKAHASHI reiterated the necessity of improving the basic neonatal and maternal health care services of rural Nepal.  At the same time, Ambassador TAKAHASHI expressed his belief that this project will benefit the local community by contributing to the improvement of the health environment in the area, and play a significant role in strengthening the friendly relationship between Japan and Nepal.
