Traffic Safety Campaign Starts

The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has the pleasure of announcing, on the occasion of installation of traffic light system in Kalimati, and Maitighar, the start of the Traffic Safety Campaign as a soft component of the project for Improvement of Intersections in Kathmandu City. The Campaign is projected and financed by the Grant Assistance of the Government of Japan. The Intersections Improvement Project has started to implement its hard component, construction of the physical facilities necessary for the improvement of ten intersections in Kathmandu City, on February 16, 2002. Recently opened Kalimati and Maitighar Intersections are among these ten intersections of the Project. The Campaign aims at enhancing the proper use of the facilities and starts from June 23, 2002.

For the purpose of implementation of the project for Improvement of Intersections in Kathmandu City with both hard and soft components, the Government of Japan has decided to extend a Grant Aid to His Majesty's Government of Nepal of which the Exchange of Notes (E/N) signing ceremony has been taken place on July 3, 2001.

The Campaign will deliver instructions through different medias such as television programs, dramas, newspapers and radio programs, posters for advertizing, publication and dissemination of textbooks to make the general public familiar with the new facilities and its system. The Project will also produce manuals for signal adjustment and signal equipment for the use of related organizations of the Government of Nepal. In addition to this, the Project will organize several workshops to make the concerned personnel familiar with the new facilities and its system.

The Embassy of Japan believes firmly that the Intersections Improvement Project will contribute to alleviating traffic problems of not only human and car accidents but also severe congestion, fuel loss and considerable emissions causing health hazards and air pollution, and thus in minimizing the adverse affects on ordinary citizens' daily activities as well as the urban environment.
