Grant Assistance for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities

The Government of Japan has agreed to extend grant assistance up to two hundred seventy-seven million yen (¥277,000,000), approximately two million three hundred thirty-nine thousand US dollars (US$2,339,000), or about one hundred seventy-four million two hundred thirty-three thousand Nepalese rupees (NRs.174,233,000), to His Majesty's Government of Nepal for the execution of the project for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities.

His Excellency Mr. Zenji KAMINAGA, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Nepal, and Mr. Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, His Majesty's Government of Nepal, signed and exchanged the Notes today on behalf of their respective governments.

This grant will be utilized to purchase the products and services necessary for the construction of a distribution reservoir, water transmission pipeline and other related facilities, and services necessary for the transportation of the afore-mentioned products, for the improvement of water supply services in central Lalitpur under the Shainbu Service Area. The grant being signed today will be utilized for the third phase of the project for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities.

The project for Improvement of Kathmandu Water Supply Facilities has already been in implementation under the Japanese grant assistance based on the Exchange of Notes dated on December 27, 2001 and November 7, 2002. Including the E/N being signed today, the Government of Japan has agreed to extend a total of two billion two hundred forty-four million yen (¥2,244,000,000) to His Majesty's Government of Nepal for the implementation of this project.

After the completion of this whole project, it is expected that the capacity of water supply facility will be augmented by 20,600 m3/day (20.6 million liters per day). Besides, this project is also expected to contribute to reduce the leakage and to improve the water supply quality in the target area (South-East of Kathmandu, Madhyapur, West of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur service area). It is also expected that the facilities constructed under this project will play an important role in improving the water supply services in the target area.

On the occasion, H.E. Mr. KAMINAGA expressed his sincere hope that the continued support of the Government of Japan to His Majesty's Government of Nepal in its development endeavors would certainly help promote Nepal's efforts for nation-building and improve the well-being of the Nepalese people. This support would also prove to be another milestone in strengthening the existing cordial relationship of friendship and cooperation between the two nations in the year to come.
