Japanese Assistance to Titepati Promotion and Research Center

The Embassy of Japan has decided to extend a grant of sixty-three thousand, six hundred and four US dollars (US$63,604) to Titepati Promotion and Research Center (TPRC) in Japan's fiscal year 2003 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan. TPRC will utilize the grant for the implementation of the Project for Construction of Moxa Factory and Clinic.

A grant contract to this effect was signed today by His Excellency Mr. Zenji KAMINAGA, Ambassador of Japan, and Mr. Ishwor Raj BALAMI, Chairman of the Titepati Promotion and Research Center (TPRC).

The grant will be utilized by the TPRC in the construction of a three-storied moxa factory and clinic building in Chalanakhel VDC, about 15 km southwest of Kathmandu city. The building will consist of spaces for moxa production, clinic, treatments beds, rehabilitation, training hall, office and other facilities.

Titepati Promotion and Research Center, established jointly by Japanese and Nepalese professionals in 2001, has been involved in oriental treatment by using moxa prepared from Titepati in Japan. As the Titepati (also known as Yomogi in Japanese) is easily available in Nepal, TPRC plans to use the Nepali Moxa. The oriental treatment is much cheaper in comparison to the modern medicines.

Titepati Promotion and Research Center outlines the objectives of the project as: (1) to collect the Titepati to produce the moxa for their use in free health camps; (2) to organize free AMA (Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Acupressure) therapy health camps, in villages where there is no doctor, by using the moxa produced at the Center; and (3) to develop the quality of moxa and AMA therapy through research, workshops, seminars and promote them.

The project is expected to provide oriental treatment to about 24,000 patients annually and provide employment to about 2,300 persons.
