Japanese Assistance to Jhoda Devdhar Development Group for Construction of RCC Bridge at Devdhar Khola

The Embassy of Japan has decided to extend a grant of ninety-two thousand, five hundred and twenty-five US Dollars (US$ 92,525), equivalent to approximately six million, five hundred sixty thousand and twenty-three Nepali Rupees (NPR 6,560,023) to Jhoda Devdhar Development Group, for the implementation of the Project for the Construction of RCC Bridge over Devdhar Khola, in Japan's Fiscal Year 2005 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.
A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu Hiraoka, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Jai Bahadur Adhikari, Chairman, Jhoda Devdhar Development Group, Hadiya VDC of Udayapur District.
The Grant will be utilized for the construction of a 25-meter long RCC bridge over Devdhar Khola in Hadiya VDC of Udayapur District. The construction of the bridge will contribute towards improved accessibility of the Gaighat-Beltar road; the only road linking the eastern VDCs of Udayapur with Gaighat, the District Headquarter, throughout the year. The construction of the bridge will directly benefit approximately 90,000 people residing in Hadiya, neighboring VDCs and Triyuga Municipality, which accounts for more than 30% of the population of the district.
Out of the total project cost of NPR 9,940,845, Jhoda Devdhar Development Group, Community Forest Users' Groups, Udayapur DDC and the neighboring VDCs will bear up to 31% of the cost, which will include construction of the approach road, river protection works and other works and services.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Mr. Hiraoka stressed the need for better facilities to uplift the living standard for the socio-economic development of the region, and also expressed his belief that the assistance will serve as a milestone in further strengthening the friendly relations between Japan and the Kingdom of Nepal.
