Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the comprehensive peace agreement reached between the Government of Nepal and the Maoists

- Japan welcomes the news that the Government of Nepal and the CPN (Maoists) have reached a comprehensive peace agreement.
- Japan values this agreement as it sets out a concrete course for the consolidation of democracy and the realization of lasting peace in Nepal. Japan hopes that this agreement will be implemented sincerely and that an election for the constitutional assembly, which is to be held by June 2007, will be carried out freely and fairly.
- Japan intends to continue assistance to the Government of Nepal's efforts for the promotion of democracy and peace building.
