The 9-day exhibition of "Japanese Prints 1950 - 1990" co-organized by the Embassy of Japan and Nepal Art Council and supported by the Japan Foundation, is open at Nepal Art Council from January 20 to 28. Ambassador Kaminaga and the chairman of the council and former prime minister of Nepal, Mr. Kirti Nidhi Bista, jointly inaugurated the exhibition on January 19.
In the exhibition, 75 contemporary prints of Japan by 46 artists that reflect the changes in Japanese art between the 1950s and the 1980s are on display. The exhibition is roughly divided into five categories. These are first of all, art works of older artists who have revived the art of cutting woodblocks and applied modern formal ideas to their prints; secondly, leading Japanese artists who successfully broke away from the United States and Europe; thirdly, etchers; fourthly, internationally active contemporary artists and finally, young artists who have expanded the application of print media.
The subjects and the works by the artists brought together in the exhibition represent each artist's individual experience of Japanese art and culture providing the spectator a good idea of the range of this art in postwar Japan.
