Japan’s Assistance for the Project for Construction of a School Building for Basic Education for Shree Indra Higher Secondary School in Doti District

The Government of Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of 94,566 US Dollars; equivalent to approximately 7,423,431 Nepalese Rupees to Shree Indra Higher Secondary School in Doti District. This financial assistance is extended under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan in Japan's Fiscal Year 2011. The recipient namely, Shree Indra Higher Secondary School, will implement the Project for Construction of a School Building for Basic Education.

The Grant Contract relating to this project was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Kunio TAKAHASHI, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, Mr. Min Bahadur Shahi, principal of Shree Indra Higher Secondary School.

Shree Indra Higher Secondary School, located at Thikatar VDC in Doti District, has been providing education to students of primary school level since its establishment in 1955. Although the school is located in a remote area, this public school has made untiring efforts to improve its education. The school has extended ECD classes as well as Grades 11 and 12 to provide an integrated education from pre-primary level to higher secondary level for local children. Furthermore, the school also has been assigned as a "Resource Center" by the District Education Office and plays an important role among neighboring schools. However, the existing school buildings, which were constructed with the help of local people, are now in a dilapidated condition and are of limited space. Two buildings utilized by Grade 1 to Grade 8 are 18 years and 22 years old respectively and are not in a shape to provide a comfortable learning environment to the teachers as well as the students. Each of the classrooms is extremely small causing many problems which hamper the students from concentrating on their studies and the teachers from teaching properly and effectively.  Since the roof of the building leaks, they have to stop classes during the heavy rain. What is worse, the school is not being able to manage the increasing number of students due to its limited space.

To address these issues, the school will improve the learning environment by constructing a two-storey school building with eight rooms which is capable of holding more than 550 students from grade one to grade eight. The project is also expected to contribute to reduce the existing gap in educational opportunities and facilities between urban and rural areas.

Speaking at the function, H.E. Mr. Kunio TAKAHASHI expressed his belief that the project signed today is going to contribute to support the education of rural children, and he hopes that the grant will play a significant role in further strengthening the cordial and friendly relationship between Japan and Nepal.
