The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a grant assistance of three hundred fifty million yen (350,000,000), equivalent to three million one hundred and ninety-one thousand US dollars (US$3,191,000), or approximately two hundred twenty seven million and eight hundred fifty thousand Nepalese rupees (NRs. 227,850,000), to His Majesty's Government of Nepal as Food Aid in Japan's Fiscal Year 2003.

His Excellency Mr. Zenji KAMINAGA, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Nepal, and Mr. Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Secretary of Ministry of Finance of His Majesty's Government of Nepal have signed and exchanged the notes today on behalf of their respective Governments.

The assistance has been provided with the basic objective to enable His Majesty's Government of Nepal to procure rice and supply it to the needy population living in the food deficient and insurgency affected districts of Nepal.

The Government of Japan has been providing Food Aid to Nepal since 1980. In Japan's Fiscal Year 1999, two hundred and ninety million yen (290,000,000), approximately about two million seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars (US$2,720,000) was provided to His Majesty's Government of Nepal to procure rice.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. KAMINAGA stated that Japan had also provided 37 metric tons of emergency food equivalent to 370,000 sets of meals, to the insurgency affected people of the Mid-Western Region of Nepal in Japan's Fiscal Year 2002 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.

He further added that the Food Aid signifies the aspiration of the Government of Japan and its people to partially address the problems and suffering of people affected by the insurgency and food shortages in Nepal.
