Nepali Teachers Participate in Study Tour
|
From October 23 to November 5, two Nepali teachers, Ms. Samjhana Pokharel, Vice Principal, Ananda Bhumi Boarding High School, and Mr. Kumar Shrestha, Principal, Zenith English Secondary School, took part in the Japan Foundation's Study Tour Program for Secondary School Educators. The tour offered teachers from all around the world the opportunity to learn about the Japanese education system, meet Japanese teachers and students, as well as meet teachers from different countries, and to bring their experiences back to the classroom in their home country. Essentially it is a cultural exchange program with the goal of increasing understanding between nations.
For Mr. Shrestha the school visit was the most memorable and valuable aspect of the tour: "We visited kinder garnet to upper secondary school, participated in lessons and after school activities. I was deeply impressed to see the students clean their class rooms and school compound themselves. I was further impressed to see the disable students study in the same classroom with other students. As an educator I realized that it is essential to adopt such system for the betterment of Nepal's education system."
In addition, the tour acquainted the participants with Japanese society through a home-stay as well as a wide range of site visits in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima. They had the opportunity to meet an A-bomb survivor in Hiroshima, who talked about her personal experiences. Ms. Pokherel said, "We also went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial which was an amazing place. I feel that this should be experienced by everyone to show the futility of war, and its effect on innocent civilians." She added, "I had a wonderful experience in Japan, and saw many similarities and differences in both their way of life, and their education systems. However, we have one fundamental thing in common; we do whatever we can to support our students and shape them into being productive and responsible members of society."
