Japanese Assistance to Committed Society for Change (COSOC) Nepal, Dhading for the Installation of
Solar Water Lifting System



The Embassy of Japan has decided to extend a grant of ninety-one thousand, six hundred and thirty-two US Dollars (US$ 91,632), equivalent to approximately six million, four hundred ninety-six thousand, seven hundred and nine Nepali Rupees (6,496,709) to Committed Society for Change (COSOC) Nepal for the implementation of the Project for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation based on Solar Lifting System in Dhading District, in Japan's Fiscal Year 2005 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan.

A Grant Contract to this effect was signed and exchanged today between His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu Hiraoka, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Bodha Narayan Shrestha, Secretary General of COSOC Nepal.

The Grant will be utilized for the installation of Solar Water Lifting System in five villages of Maidee VDC in Dhading District. Similarly, 26 public tap stands will be installed to distribute water to the community. Approximately 1,500 people in those villages will directly benefit from this project.

Out of the total project cost of NPR 8,277,927, COSOC Nepal, the recipient and implementing organization, and the community will bear up to 22% of the cost, which will cover the cost of program for health and sanitation awareness, and monitoring and supervision of the project.

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Mr. Hiraoka stressed the need for safe drinking water and awareness of health and sanitation. Furthermore, H.E. Mr. Hiraoka also expressed his firm belief that the community will make a concerted effort for the smooth implementation of the project with proper management and maintenance with a deep feeling of ownership and self-help effort, and will be able to utilize saved time in various income generating activities, this project will ultimately uplift the living standard of the area.
