Japan Extends Food Aid to Nepal

The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a Grant Assistance of four hundred million yen (400,000,000), equivalent to two hundred thirty-four million and four hundred thousand Nepalese Rupees (NRs.234,400,000), or approximately three million seven hundred and fourteen thousand US dollars (US$3,714,000), to the Government of Nepal for Food Aid (KR) in the Japan's Fiscal Year 2007.

His Excellency Mr. Tatsuo MIZUNO, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Mr. Vidyadhar Mallik, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal have signed and exchanged the Notes today on behalf of their
respective Governments.

The Assistance has been provided with the basic objective of enabling the Government of Nepal to procure rice and supply it within Nepal, and will be delivered by the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) through the national distribution network of the Government of Nepal to the needy population living in the food-deficit districts.

Japan, as a close friend and development partner to Nepal, has been providing Food Aid to Nepal for the last few years. The Food Aid is one of the oldest schemes of the Government of Japan, and, as of Japan's Fiscal Year 2006, the Government of Japan has extended cumulatively its Food Aid to Nepal, which is worth 7.22 billion Japanese Yen.

HE Mr. Tatsuo MIZUNO expressed his wish that the Food Aid will assist the effort by the Government of Nepal to ease the difficulties faced by the people in the food-deficit areas. He also stated that it is the wishes of the Government of Japan that today's Food Aid will contribute to overcome daily difficulties of the people and enable Nepalese people to realize the New Nepal, which is further stable and prosperous country.

HE Mr. MIZUNO also expressed his belief that the Food Aid signifies the wishes of the Government of Japan and its people for further improvement of well-being of the Nepali people.
