Japan Approves the Utilization of the Counterpart Fund of KR

The Government of Japan has, based on the request made by the Government of Nepal, recently approved the utilization of the Counterpart Fund under the Food Aid (KR) of one hundred and twenty million Nepalese Rupees (NRs. 120,000,000) for the following four (4) on-going projects. In the agriculture sector, the Government of Japan has approved three (3) projects that are being implemented by various agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The projects include:
  1. Agriculture Research Project is being implemented with an objective of increasing production and productivity of crop and horticultural commodities at farmers' level through varietal improvement, crop management and integrated pest and disease management. Out-reach research works at the farmers' level are also supported under this program.

  2. Animal Health Service Program is being implemented with an objective of improving the health status of livestock through vaccination, treatment and others health related support services at the farmers' level to prevent the outbreak and spreading out of disease and to minimize the financial loss for small farmers.

  3. Livestock Development Service Program is being implemented with an objective of promoting livestock development and improve the quality of livestock products through technical support. The Counterpart Fund is being used for developing model activities of goat development program for poverty reduction.
In the irrigation sector, the Government of Japan has approved one (1) project, Operation Maintenance and Sustainable Management of Irrigation System, that is being implemented by the Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Water Resources with an objective of improving the effectiveness of the existing irrigation system through proper management and maintenance works.

The Counterpart Fund was established through the financial assistance extended by the Government of Japan under the Food Aid (KR). The Government of Nepal has procured rice through this assistance and sold it in the domestic market. The amount collected from selling the rice was deposited as a Counterpart Fund. The Fund can be utilized for implementing various social and economic development projects through consultation between the two Governments.
