Announcement for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships for 2008

The Government of Japan offers scholarships for Postgraduate/Research Students and Undergraduate Students for 2008 under the Monbukagakusho scholarship program as follows:
Scholarship for Postgraduate/Research Students
- Qualifications
Applicants must be Nepali nationals under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2008 (i.e. born on or after April 2, 1973) and have completed at least 16 years of education (18 years for medical and veterinary students) and secured 70% marks for Natural Sciences and 60% for Humanities and Social Sciences in aggregate at all level of exams.
- Fields of Study
Humanities and Social Sciences: Literature, History, Aesthetics, Laws, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Fine Arts etc.
Natural Sciences: Pure Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Pharmacology, Medicine, Dentistry, Home Economics etc.
The field of study must be the same as the applicant's previous study leading to their final graduation. Applicants need to attach attested copies of certificates and mark-sheets along with the application.
Applicants who have passed the first screening must take a written examination of English or Japanese language that will be conducted by the Embassy.

- Terms of Scholarship
Two years from April or October 2008 to March 2010 (extendable for masters/doctoral courses)
- Scholarship Benefits
170,000 yen per month for first year and 160,000 yen in and after the thirteenth month of stay in Japan will be given to each grantee during the term of scholarship in addition to school fee and air transportation to and from Japan.
- Japanese Language
Applicant must be willing to learn the Japanese language, interested in Japan and enthusiastic about deepening his/her understanding of Japan after arriving.
Scholarship for Undergraduate Students
- Qualifications
Applicants must be Nepali nationals between 17 to 21 years of age as of April 1, 2008 (i.e. born on between April 2, 1986 and April 1, 1991). Applicants must either have completed a twelve-year regular course of education. In addition, they must have secured 75% marks for Natural Sciences and 65% for Humanities and Social Sciences in aggregate in SLC and plus two exams.
- Fields of Study
Humanities and Social Sciences (A): Laws, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language and others.
Humanities and Social Sciences (B): Economics and Business Administration
Natural Sciences A: Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric and Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering) and other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mercantile Marine, Biotechnology).
Natural Science B: Agricultural studies (Agricultural Chemistry, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries), Hygienic studies (Pharmacy, Hygienic, Nursing), Science (Biology).
Natural Science C: Medicine, Dentistry.

- Application Form Distribution

- Selection
Qualified applicants must take a written examination that will be conducted by the Embassy on August 4, 2007 (Sat.). Subjects are as follows:
Humanities and Social Sciences: English and Mathematics
Natural Science A: English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
Natural Science B & C: English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry
Applicants who are proficient in Japanese should submit his/her 'Study Proposal in Japan' in Japanese and interview will be conducted in Japanese in the final screening.
- Terms of Scholarship
Five years from April 2008-March 2013 (seven years for medical/veterinary including one-year preparatory education in Japanese language and other subjects)
- Scholarship Benefits
134,000 yen per month for first two years and 126,000 yen in and after the twenty-fifth month of stay in Japan will be given to each grantee with the condition that the scholarship will be suspended in the event of the grantee being absent from the university for long periods of time. School fees will be paid by the Japanese Government.
- Language: All classes will be given in Japanese language.
