|
The Government of Japan has recently decided to extend a grant of five million seven hundred fifty nine thousand seven hundred and sixty one Japanese Yen (JPY 5,759,761), equivalent to approximately three million four hundred nine seven hundred and seventy-nine Nepalese Rupees (NPR 3,409,779), to the Institute for Himalayan Conservation (IHC) a Japanese NGO for the implementation of a Project for Forest Conservation in Remote Villages in Myagdi and Parbat Districts for Income Generation. This grant is given in Japan's fiscal year 2006 under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects scheme of the Government of Nepal.
IHC implemented a similar project in JFY2005 under the same scheme, and this is its second phase.
The Grant will be utilized for community-based development of villages through forest conservation and forest-based income generation activities. For this purpose, nurseries, established during the previous project period in Narchyang and Salija VDCs of Myagdi and Parbat Districts, will be expanded. IHC will also provide training on forest management, as well as extend facilities to promote the utilization of local materials for income generating activities.
Since its establishment in 1974 by the renowned Dr. Jiro KAWAKITA, IHC has been operating an integrated project for environmental conservation and village development in Nepal. IHC has been extending its support through cooperation with IHC-Nepal, a local NGO.
Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects is a scheme to provide financial assistance for social and economic development and emergency humanitarian assistance projects being undertaken by Japanese NGOs in developing countries and regions. The basic format of this scheme consists of six major areas, including support for economic and social development cooperation activities that have a direct affect at grassroots level and grant aid for NGO emergency humanitarian assistance projects etc.
