Japan Extends Food Aid to Nepal


The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a Grant Assistance of two hundred and seventy million Yen (270,000,000), equivalent to one hundred and seventy-eight million, four hundred and seventy thousand Nepalese Rupees (NRs. 178,470,000), or approximately two million, four hundred and sixteen thousand US dollars (US$2,416,000), to the Government of Nepal for Food Aid (KR) in the Japan's Fiscal Year 2005.

His Excellency Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Dr. Bhoj Raj Ghimire, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal have signed and exchanged Notes today on behalf of their respective Governments.

The Assistance has been provided with the basic objective of enabling the Government of Nepal to procure rice and supply it to the needy population living in food deficit districts of Nepal.

HE Mr. Tsutomu HIRAOKA expressed wishes that the Food Aid will be of assistance to the Government of Nepal and ease the difficulties faced by the people in the affected area. He also stated that it is the intention and the wish of the Government of Japan that today's Food Aid will be of support to the endeavor of Nepal towards the consolidation of democracy.

Japan, being a close friend and development partner, has been providing Food Aid to Nepal since 1970. Food Aid is one of the oldest schemes of the Government of Japan, and as of Japan's Fiscal Year 2004, the Government of Japan has extended its Food Aid to Nepal 17 times, worth of 6.65 billion Japanese Yen.

It is to be noted that the Year 2006 marks the 50th Anniversary of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Nepal. Japan has been assisting the Government of Nepal during these decades in its efforts to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable economic development.

On the occasion, HE Mr. HIRAOKA expressed his belief that Food Aid signifies the wishes of the Government of Japan and its people for the promotion and well being of the Nepalese people.
