- Rural Development Support to Promote Sericulture
The Embassy of Japan provided a financial assistance of forty-six thousand three hundred US dollars (US$46,300), approximately NRs. 3,343,000, to the Centre for Sericulture Development and Environment Improvement (CSDEI) for the implementation of the Project for Rural Development Support to Promote Sericulture in Nepal.
The grant was used to procure spray pumps, gas masks, pruning scissors and thermometers with hygrometer for 500 seri-farmers of Syangja, Palpa, Kathmandu and Kavrepalanchowk districts.
The project was expected to enhance working efficiency of farmers, upgrade quality treatment of the silkworms and feed-base, ensure bulk production and upgrade productivity. The assistance enabled the farmers to improve farm management for increasing production capacity.
It is important to note here that Mr. Masaru Tsuzuku, a JICA Expert on Sericulture under the technical cooperation of the Japanese Government, has been actively engaged in the technology transfer in sericulture in Nepal. A "Mini-Project-Type Technical Cooperation for Sericulture Promotion" is already in effect in Nepal. The Project aims at developing institutional and technical capacities of HMG/N for managing silkworm egg production and providing technical support to the seri-farmers.
- Municipal Environmental Improvement Programme of Patan
The Embassy of Japan extended a financial assistance of seventy-four thousand two hundred and seventy-five US Dollars (US$74,275), approximately NRs. 5,362,710, to Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City (LSMC) to implement Municipal Environmental Improvement Programmes.
LSMC would utilize the grant to carry out works designed to improve the environmental and sanitary situation of the area along Jawalakhel-Lagankhel road, which includes garbage management, city life environment improvement and preservation of historic places. With this financial support, LSMC would introduce a new solid waste collection system in the area as a model programme and will also renovate the existing sewer drainage system and develop greenery on either side of the road.
The Embassy places much importance on environmental improvement programmes initiated by the local communities through their self-help efforts. This support, as part of the Participatory Programmes to make Kathmandu Clean and Beautiful which the Embassy of Japan wishes to encourage, is expected to help carry out works for developing and improving the city life environment for which people of the community and LSMC work together. The Embassy has earlier extended similar assistance to Kathmandu Metropolitan City to renovate some of the stone spouts.
- Improvement of Environment and Clean up Activities in Changu Narayan
The Embassy of Japan provided a financial assistance of thirty-three thousand four hundred and thirty-three US Dollars (US$33,433), equivalent to NRs.2,413,877, to Japan University Students Association, Nepal (JUSAN), to implement the Project for Improvement of Environment and Clean up Activities in the Village of Changu Narayan World Heritage.
Major works carried out under the project included the promotion of awareness for clean environment, construction of garbage tanks and incinerators, renovation of monuments such as Pati and waterspouts, beautification of the park, among others with the active participation of the community. It is expected that the assistance would help improve the environment of the village of the heritage site for the pilgrims, visitors and the local residents, in addition to creating awareness among the local people towards heritage conservation and clean environment.
- Community Bridge over Jhanj River in Rautahat District
The Embassy of Japan extended a financial assistance of ninety-four thousand two hundred and forty-six US dollars (US$94,246), approximately NRs. 6,946,000, to the Rautahat Development Trust (RDT) for the implementation of the Project for the Construction of a Community Bridge over Jhanj River at Matsari in Rautahat District.
At present, 17 VDCs of Rautahat District have no direct road access to the Gaur Municipality, the district headquarters of Rautahat District, which is the main commercial and administrative center of the district, and Chandranighapur, another business center of the district. After completion of this Project, more than 30,000 people living in six VDCs of the Northern part of the Jhanj River are expected to be directly benefited, in addition to more than 60,000 people living in 11 other VDCs of the district.
- Multipurpose Martial Arts Center
The Embassy of Japan extended a grant up to ninety thousand five hundred and eighteen US dollars (US$90,518), equivalent to NRs.6,666,650, to Kathmandu Metropolitan City for the implementation of the Project for the Construction of a Multipurpose Martial Arts Center in Nayabazaar, Kathmandu.
The Japanese grant assistance was extended to the multipurpose martial arts center which was constructed to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Sister City Relationship between Matsumoto City of Japan and Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The Project was implemented jointly by Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Matsumoto City and School Judo Association. Matsumoto City also made a contribution to the Project which was funded by the donation of citizens of Matsumoto City, including the supply of materials such as tatami mattresses, Judo and Kendo outfits etc.
The essential function of the Multipurpose Martial Arts Center is to serve as an educational centre for promoting sports through Japanese martial arts like Judo and Kendo which are also popular among the people of Nepal. Martial arts like Judo and Kendo are recognized as a source of learning discipline, achieving self-control and sound mind.
- Promotion of High Quality Fruits in Kavre District
The Embassy of Japan provided a financial assistance of forty-seven thousand two hundred US Dollars (US$47,200), approximately NRs. 3,476,200, to the District Development Committee, Kavrepalanchowk, to implement the Project for Rural Development Support to Promote High Quality Fruits in Kavre District.
The main objective of the project is to promote and expand the market-oriented production of high quality fruits in the district with a view to increasing the income of farmers and raising their standard of living. The project is expected to encourage high quality fruit cultivation and marketing by the farmers concerned by adopting a group approach. Under the group approach, farmers groups will be formed in the potential areas and each group will have one pilot farm (including nursery farm) and one small fruit collection centre. In addition, necessary agricultural equipment will be provided for the use of a cooperative formed by the farmers. Technical training programme will also be conducted in the areas by JOCV Volunteer(s).
The Embassy places high importance on the market-oriented production and promotion of high quality fruits and vegetables as well as cash crops like sericulture.
- Rural Electrification in Darchula
The Embassy of Japan extended a financial assistance of forty-one thousand two hundred and seventy US dollars (US$41,270), approximately NRs.3,039,000, to the Environment and Power Concern Group of Darchula for the implementation of the Project for Rural Electrification in Darchula District through Photovoltic.
The grant was utilized in procuring accessories for 153 sets of photovoltic system to be installed in community institutions including the cost of transportation and installing of 680 sets of photovoltic system at 32 VDCs of Darchula District.
At present, 32 VDCs (with a population of 75,000) out of the 41 VDCs in the district (with a population of 101, 683) have no access to electricity. In fact, majority of the people depend either on kerosene or locally available pinewood for lighting and cooking. On the other hand, due to the remoteness, construction of electricity transmission line from central grid to meet rural demands is economically unfeasible.
In addition, 16 high schools and colleges, 32 VDC offices and 54 health institutions would also be benefited by this Project. After completion of this Project, the improved environment of their schools as well as health care institutions will directly or indirectly benefit many people in different aspects in the District.
- Health Post in Gangolia, Rupandehi District
The Embassy of Japan extended a grant of thirty-four thousand one hundred and eighteen US dollars (US$34,118), approximately Rs. 2,512,815, to the B.P. Rural Service Centre for the implementation of a project to construct a health post in Gongolia VDC of Rupandehi District in Lumbini Zone.
The key objective of the project was to construct a health post that would provide primary health care services to the people of Rupandehi District. A total population of 38,714 of five (5) Village Development Committees, including Gongolia VDC, would be benefited by this project. The services to be rendered included health camps, immunization and nutrition programmes, family planning and maternal/child health services, and awareness programmes in general sanitation and community health, among many others.
