This assistance would enable the farmers to improve farm management in order to increase production capacity, and thus raise their incomes. In particular, the project is expected to enhance the working efficiency of farmers, upgrade the quality of treatment of silkworms and their feed-base through cooperative use of the equipment provided, ensure bulk production, and increase productivity. Furthermore, the project is expected to promote community cooperation in rural development through systematic sericulture farming.
- Mangal Jan Bijaya High School at Mangaltar
The Embassy extended grant assistance of fifty-one thousand, four hundred and eighty-three US dollars (US$51,483), equivalent to NRs.3,843,000, to the District Development Committee of Kavrepalanchowk (Kavre DDC) for the construction of Mangal Jan Bijaya High School.
Mangal Jan Bijaya High School is located in Mangaltar VDC, about 75 km. from the city of Kathmandu. The school provides education to about 1300 students from Class One through Class Ten who live in seven (7) nearby VDCs, and benefits about 1800 households. At present, inadequate classrooms, poor physical facilities and a generally poor learning environment are hindering the provision of quality education to the students, who will bear the responsibilities of developing their communities in the future.
The new school building will have eighteen (18) classrooms, including library and laboratory, as well as a sufficient number of toilets.
The Embassy places great importance on public well-being through active participation and self-help efforts of local communities. This Project is a noteworthy example of self-help activities, in which communities take on the responsibility of assuring a bright future for their children.
- Equipment for Fire Fighting and Ambulance Service
The Embassy extended grant assistance of forty nine thousand four hundred and one US dollars (US$ 49,401), approximately NRs 3,688,000, to the Fire Fighters Volunteer Association of Nepal (FAN) for the implementation of the Project for the Supply of Equipment for Fire Fighting and Ambulance Service in municipalities and Village Development Committees (VDCs) of Sunsari, Morang and Kavrepalanchok districts.
Under the project, Dharan and Itahari municipalities in Sunsari district will be provided with one (1) ambulance vehicle and one (1) fire fighting engine respectively and Belbari and Panchkhal VDCs in Morang and Kavrepalanchok districts respectively will be provided with one (1) ambulance vehicle each. These fire engines and ambulances are secondhand and donated from local governments of Japan. The Government of Japan supports for the transportation costs from Japan to Nepal of these donated secondhand products.
Implementation of the project will help people in Sunsari, Morang and Kavrepalanchok districts get timely transportation services to hospitals and fire fighting services during emergencies. In addition, the project is also expected to lessen pressure on the existing equipment in the municipalities and provide extended service in those VDCs where ambulance and fire fighting service has not been easily available. Furthermore, the project is expected to help boost welfare of the people in those VDCs and municipalities.
- Improvement of Environment and Beautification in Kathmandu Durbar Square

In executing these project activities, the Project will supply and install enough numbers of street dustbins and mobile dustbins to collect pedestrian waste from the project area. Similarly, the Project will also supply dustbins to provide door-to-door waste collection services. Two (2) waste transport vehicles will also be procured to materialize the effective management of the waste from the project area.
Besides, some infrastructure development activities, such as construction as well as improvement of surface drains, stone paving, sidewalk improvement, installation of street lamps etc. will be carried out. - Manaslu Conservation Area Project
The Embassy has extended a grant of thirty-three thousand, four hundred and fifty US dollars (US$ 33,450), approximately NRs. 2,497,000, to the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (KMTNC) for the realization of the Manaslu Conservation Area Project.
In 1997, the KMTNC initiated an eco-tourism development project in the northern part of Gorkha District through the Department of Tourism of the Government of Nepal, with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank. The Manaslu region was declared to be a Conservation Area by the Government of Nepal in 1998. At this time, the responsibility for nature conservation activities was given to the KMTNC for a period of 10 years, in order to improve the socio-economic condition of the local inhabitants, leading to the conservation of the region. Since then, the KMTNC has been working to conserve the natural resources and rich cultural heritage of the Manaslu Conservation Area through the development and management of eco-tourism with the active participation and contribution of the local inhabitants.
Under this grant contract, the KMTNC would carry out the sustainable community development component of the project by constructing seven (7) drinking water systems and seven (7) community toilets in different parts of the conservation area.
- Infrastructure Development for Community Development Center
The Embassy has provided a grant of seventy-nine thousand, one hundred and fifty-three US Dollars (US$79,153), approximately NRs. 5,908,800, to the INDIGENOUS DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION OF NEPAL (IDF-Nepal) to implement a project for the construction of a Community Development Centre in Jhapa District.
The grant will be utilized for the construction of a 2-storey building in Charpane Village Development Committee in Jhapa District, which will be utilized as a Community Development Centre. The building will include, among other facilities, a training hall and accommodation for trainees from the nearby communities.
The overall objective of the Community Development Center is to upgrade the knowledge and skills of the people in the communities through training so that traditional arts and crafts, in which they have specialized knowledge, can be improved to better suit the demand of the potential consumers. The training programmes undertaken in the Centre will not only benefit the preservation and promotion of traditional crafts and products, but will also greatly help to reduce the poverty existing in such communities.
- Human Resource Development Center in Kathmandu
The Embassy has extended a grant assistance of forty five thousand, four hundred and ninety US dollars (US$ 45,490), approximately NRs 3,450,416, to the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) for the implementation of the Project for the Establishment of Human Resource Development Centre for Management and Administration in Kathmandu.
The implementation of the project is expected to provide an avenue for the development of managerial expertise and knowledge so widely and profoundly that it will eventually contribute to the sustainable development of the national economy.
The Human Resource Development Centre for Management and Administration has the objectives to be a catalyst in management education in Nepal with special focus on management as well as to establish networks among business communities. It also aims at encouraging business people and employees by imparting skills such as motivation, communication and human resource management. Through those objectives, the Centre will contribute to bridge the gap between the emerging requirements and lack of capabilities at the enterprise level. As a result, each company is expected to build competitiveness to make inroads into the global market and to lead the nation into sustainable economic development.
- Student Hostel in Khumjung School
The Embassy has provided financial assistance of thirty-three thousand, nine hundred and ninety-eight US dollars (US$ 33,998), approximately NRs. 2,538,000, for the Project for the Construction of a New Student Hostel in Khumjung School. With this grant, the project will be implemented by the Matsumoto Himalaya Friendship Club (MHFC), a Japanese NGO.
The grant will be used to construct a new hostel building in Khumjung School, located in Solukhumbu district. Khumjung School was the first school built in the area, under a programme funded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1960.
The existing hostel in the school, built in 1984, accommodates only 15 students. There has been a steady growth in the number of students from both surrounding villages and far-away parts of the district seeking admission to the school, as it is the only school in the area that provides secondary as well as primary level education. Due to the limited capacity of the existing hostel, the school has not been able to accommodate sufficient students from far-away places, causing concern for both students and parents.
When the construction is completed, the school will be able to accommodate more than twice the existing number of students, and will lead to an increased number of educated people in the area. Thus, this project is expected to contribute a great deal to the promotion of the education sector in Solukhumbu District.
- Secondary School Building in Gorkha District
The Embassy has extended a financial assistance of seventy-two thousand, eight hundred and twenty-five US Dollars (US$72,825), approximately NRs.5,541,982, to Himalaya Area Conservation and Development Committee, Gorkha, for the execution of the Project for Construction of a Secondary School Building at Philim, Gorkha District.
The grant will be used to construct a new secondary school building at Philim in Gorkha District that will have eleven classrooms, a library and a science laboratory among others.
Philim is located in a remote area in upper Gorkha. Though there are several primary schools in the area, they are poorly equipped. It is learnt that there is no secondary school nearby. Inaccessibility to schools has deprived local students of the opportunity of secondary education.
The establishment of a secondary school will create awareness about education and increase the number of educated people in Philim. The project is expected to greatly contribute to the promotion of the education sector in upper Gorkha that has a population of about 20,000.
- Emergency Disaster Rehabilitation of Tribhuvan Highway
The Embassy has extended a grant assistance of seventy-five thousand one hundred and sixty-four US Dollars (US$75,164), about NRs.5,791,000, to the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention (the DWIDP), Ministry of Water Resources of His Majesty's Government of Nepal for the Emergency Disaster Rehabilitation of Tribhuvan Highway.
Under this Project, debris and surplus soil will be removed, a retaining wall, gabion check-dam and some temporary structures will be constructed, and some sign boards will be placed in the Project site for emergency disaster rehabilitation.
1,500 to 2,500m high mountains surround the Kathmandu Valley. The Tribhuvan Highway is a lifeline for the people of the Valley and serves as the only corridor linking the Terai and other areas of the nation. It has been playing a significant role in Nepal's road network for socio-economic development. However, Tribhuvan Highway, especially Thankot-Naubishe section, is a considerably important segment for this lifeline and has comparatively high disaster potential due to the weak geological condition.
After the slope collapsed at 13km from Kathmandu and disrupted the road transportation in the past, the concerned authorities removed the debris and restored one-way traffic for vehicular movement. However, the risk of enlargement of landslides still remains, and the situation is unstable. In addition, a secondary collapse may occur any time if emergency rehabilitation work is not carried out in time.
- Construction of a new Girls' Hostel Building
The Embassy has extended a grant assistance of four hundred twenty-one thousand, eight hundred and eighty-five US dollars (US$421,885), approximately NRs.32,506,239, to Padma Kanya Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University, for the execution of the project for Construction of a new Girls' Hostel Building.
Established in 1951 for the purpose of encouraging women education, the Campus is the largest female educational institution in the country with about 8,000 students and 350 teaching staff. Where about 60% of the students come from outside the Kathmandu Valley, the accommodation capacity of the existing hostel (50 students) in the Campus is far short of actual demand (more than 500).
The four-storied new hostel building, which is under construction, will have 100 rooms accommodating 200 students, will have study rooms, and other facilities including toilets, bathrooms, dining hall, etc. There will be a provision of 25% reservations for three categories of students, namely, disabled (5% or 10 students), remote rural area (10% or 20 students) and poor (10% or 20 students). The hostel facility will encourage women's education and hence accelerate their participation in social activities as well as in the important task of nation building.
- Construction of a new school building in Jheskang, Palpa
The Embassy has provided thirty thousand, three hundred and one US dollars (US$30,301), approximately NRs.2,334,692, to Jheskang Development Committee in Palpa district, for the execution of the project for Construction of a new school building for Shree Krishna Secondary School Jheskang, Palpa district.
Situated in the remote part of Western Nepal, the existing building is in a dilapidated condition and without enough classroom space. About 60~70 students take their classes in a single classroom which actually is enough for only 10~15.
After the construction of a two-storied building, with 12 classrooms, the condition of the study environment is expected to improve markedly. It is a participatory project wherein the community is contributing labour.
- Establishment of a Milk Chilling Center in Kavre
Financial assistance amounting eighty-eight thousand, nine hundred and eighty-six US dollars (US$88,986), equivalent to approximately NRs.6,856,371, has been provided to District Development Committee, Kavrepalanchowk, for the execution of the Project for Establishment of a Milk Chilling Center at Bhakundebesi in Kavrepalanchowk district.
It is to be noted here that the Sindhuli Road is being constructed through the Japanese grant assistance and is expected to greatly facilitate the production and marketing of agricultural products.
In this background, if a chilling center is established, the two projects are expected to generate multiplier effect in the economic status of the farmers. The farmers in the existing situation are compelled to sell milk to the middlemen and they also face a risk of milk coagulation due to time variation in the collection of their milk in the collection centres.
- Supply of Educational Equipment for Primary Schools in four VDCs
The Embassy has extended grant assistance of eighty two thousand and five hundred US dollars (US$ 82,500), approximately NRs 6,356,625, to Milan Club Nepal for the implementation of the Project for the Supply of Educational Equipment for Primary Schools in the Dharmasthali, Kavresthali, Sangla and Phutung Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Kathmandu district.
Under the Project, 1,894 sets of desks and chairs, 46 blackboards, 44 musical organs, 103 harmonicas, 30 xylophones, 2 video cassette players, 3 video monitors and some other educational equipment will be provided to a total of eleven (11) primary schools in the above four VDCs. The used equipment is donated from schools in Japan. The Government of Japan will bear the transportation costs of this educational equipment from Japan to Nepal.
Implementation of the above Project is expected to help children in those VDCs enjoy learning and encourage them to attend schools. Besides this, the Project is also expected to help students and teachers alike acquaint themselves with modern teaching techniques and the joy of learning. Together, the Project is expected to boost enrollment ratio in those VDCs and take a step forward in aiding the government in achieving the goal of universal primary education in the country.
- Construction of a School Building in Siraha District
The Embassy has provided a grant assistance of ninety-two thousand, nine hundred and ninety US dollars (US$92,990), approximately NRs.7,188,127, to Love Green Nepal for the execution of the Project for Construction of Janata Secondary School Building at Navarajpur, Siraha District.
The grant would be utilized to construct a new school building that will have 12 classrooms, an office room, a library and a science laboratory. Required infrastructure for drinking water facility and sanitation will be developed. Necessary educational equipment will also be procured from the grant assistance.
Janata Secondary School, established in 1954 as a lower secondary school and upgraded in 1995 to a secondary level, is the only such school at Navarajpur VDC in Siraha district. The school is in a dilapidated condition and without sufficient classrooms. The school lacks facilities for drinking water and sanitation as well as adequate equipment for the classrooms. The construction of a new school is expected to create a conducive environment for education and also promote girl education in the area. About 7,500 people from Navarajpur VDC and others in the neighbouring VDCs are expected to benefit from the Project.
