29th Japanese Speech Contest

Japanese Language Teachers Association Nepal (JALTAN) organized the 29th Japanese speech contest supported by the Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Japan at Rastriya Naachghar on February 13. This year a total of 13 contestants; four in the senior level and nine in junior level, showcased a wide range of brilliant speeches before a panel of judges and an encouraging audience comprising friends, teachers and fellow students. Some speeches were impressive and inspiring; others managed to evoke laughter with their unique style of thinking.
This year the glory of senior first prize went to Ms. Mariya Khadgi from Yasashisa Japanese Language School for her speech entitled 'Rain Water Harvest'. Ms. Muna Thapa from the Campus of International Languages was awarded junior level's first prize for her speech on 'Lunch Box'. Similarly, senior 2nd and 3rd prizes went to Ms. Jyoti Rajbhandari and Mr. Liladhar Subedi, and Mr. Nabin Maharjan and Ms. Sangita Maharjan received junior 2nd and 3rd prizes, respectively. Awards were presented based on the structure, content, fluency and memorization of the speech.
The contest is one of the biggest events for learners of the Japanese language in Nepal to test their speaking ability in Japanese. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the study of Japanese, recognize academic excellence, and promote goodwill and mutual understanding between Japan and Nepal.
Ms. Thapa and Ms. Khadgi first prize winners later took part in the First South Asia Japanese Language Speech Contest organized by the SAFJUAA in New Delhi and bagged the 1st prize in the junior level and 2nd prize in the senior level, respectively.
